To the vast majority of people in my life, the image of me standing/sitting/walking around with a sock slowly proceeding off the needles isn't surprising. Socks continue to be one of the best passive projects for me when I'm not in the throes of knitting blanket squares.
The rate of sock production decreased over the past couple of years but it's been starting to sneak back up again. At least -- I've been knitting on socks and casting on socks. My success in finishing a pair of socks has been less great. I've not finished a pair since April.
I knew the "socks underway" thing was slightly out of control but seriously, observe:
Four pairs. Three of which are more than 50% done. That's 1200 meters towards Stash Dash waiting for me to get my act together and sit down and put toes on things.
And there, of course, is the rub. (Also here's the newest socks -- Cattywampus BMFA Socks That Rock Lightweight; started these in DC while I was at a conference and dashing around the Smithsonian with the Incredibly Patient Mother)
Socks need toes. I have never been great at length estimation, certainly not on the fly. So the first sock gets to a point fairly far down the foot but not yet quite ready for a toe and then I either (a) pick up the second sock from the other end/other skein and knit that down to the same point or (b) cast on a new pair!
Then I wonder where all my sock needles and my project bags go. Hmm, where could they be.
I just barely managed to resist casting on a fifth pair -- mostly because that would entail winding yarn and I don't have the swift set up.
This week I declare as finishing socks week. There is absolutely no reason that three pairs of socks cannot be done by the end of the July 4 holiday -- even if I only get some knitting in on the commute.
